>>History and Management

Triclinic Labs was founded in 2009 by David E. Bugay, G. Patrick Stahly, Shawn C. Comella, and Scott L. Childs.

Our goal is to provide the most advanced consulting and laboratory capabilities for solid-state chemical development. We routinely help the pharmaceutical and specialty chemicals industries but have also analyzed and studied counterfeit items, minerals, semiconductors, and other unique molecules. Over the last 15 years we've helped the world's chemical development groups understand, discover, improve, and protect solid-state materials.

To date we've

  • collaborated on over 1000 drug substances, drug products, and fine chemicals
  • conducted more than 500 polymorph, salt, and cocrystal projects
  • acted as consultants for 90% of the top 50 pharmaceutical companies worldwide
  • acted as witnesses and experts for nearly 100 chemical intellectual property & legal matters worldwide

Our experts have contributed to more development milestones and legal matters than any other group of contract physical and analytical chemistry experts. The principals at Triclinic were the scientific and operations drivers behind the growth of SSCI, a solid-state contract laboratory, that was the industry leader for more than a decade. The principals' shared belief in the value of customer focus, scientific integrity, and experience led to the decision to create new capabilities at Triclinic Labs.

Don't despise empiric truth.  Lots of things work in practice for which the laboratory has never found proof.  ~Martin H. Fischer

Shawn Comella
Chief Executive Officer

Mr. Comella has over 15 years of experience in starting, growing, and managing life-science companies and ventures. A molecular biologist by training, Shawn manages the financial, strategic, and business aspects of Triclinic Labs.

Prior to co-founding Triclinic Labs, Shawn held management and executive positions at various companies including Roche Diagnostics, SSCI, and Monarch LifeSciences - all leaders in their respective life-science fields.

Mr. Comella has been an invited speaker at AACC, Professional Pricing Society, and has taught classes in Entrepreneurialism at Purdue University. Mr. Comella has published numerous articles with colleagues on improving pharmaceutical R&D efficiency and accelerating the drug discovery and development process. Mr. Comella attended The Ohio State University for undergraduate and graduate education.

Simon Bates, Ph.D.
Research Fellow

Dr Simon Bates has close to 30 years experience working with X-ray and neutron diffraction characterization of the solid state.  For the last 9 years, he has been working on characterization and molecular modeling of pharmaceutical materials including both API and drug product systems.  Before moving to Triclinic Labs, Dr. Bates worked at SSCI as a Research Fellow and a Principal at Aptuit Consulting.  His work on pharmaceutical systems at SSCI/Aptuit lead to 13 peer reviewed publications 10 patent applications.

Dr. Bates’ expertise also includes computational modeling of molecular systems, computational methods for IR Spectroscopy and Thermal Analysis, and Chemometrics. His expertise has allowed Dr. Bates to work as a scientific expert in numerous patent litigation and patent prosecution cases. Dr. Bates has over 40 peer reviewed international publications and has been an invited speaker at many scientific conferences.

G. Patrick Stahly, Ph.D.
Chief Operating Officer

Dr. Stahly has over 30 years of experience in the specialty and pharmaceutical chemical industries. Since obtaining a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, he held positions of increasing responsibility at the Ethyl (now Albemarle) Corporation, was Chief Operating Officer and Chief Scientific Officer of SSCI, Inc., and was Vice President of Scientific Operations of Aptuit. His expertise includes process organic chemistry, crystallization, solids analysis, x-ray diffraction, pharmaceutical preformulation, and chiral chemistry.

He is an inventor of 44 US patents and author of 33 publications, including peer-reviewed papers and book chapters. In addition, Dr. Stahly has lectured extensively throughout the world and has taught numerous courses on solid-state chemistry.

David E. Bugay, Ph.D.
Chief Scientific Officer

Dr. Bugay, an AAPS Fellow, has over 21 years of experience in pharmaceutical development and associated intellectual property. Since receiving a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry, he held advancing positions in the Analytical R&D Department of Bristol-Myers Squibb, was Senior VP of Analytical Chemistry at SSCI, Inc., and was Managing Director of the Legal Services group of Aptuit Consulting.

His expertise includes vibrational and NMR spectroscopy, thermal analysis, x-ray diffraction, microscopy, chemometrics, and scientific aspects of patent litigation. Dr. Bugay has been an invited speaker at dozens of conferences and has taught numerous courses. In addition, he has published many peer-reviewed scientific papers, written book chapters, authored his own book, and currently serves on the USP General Chapters Expert Committee from 2005 to 2010.
